Youth Red Cross



The Youth Red Cross is organized for purposes of :

* Inculcating in the youth an awareness of health and hygiene

* Understanding and acceptance of civic and human responsibilities

* Doing service to others



The Youth Red Cross activities are directed to the particular needs of a group under a counsellor’s guidance for the purpose. The youth are encouraged and motivated to carry out their responsibilities, share their experiences with others and choose their own field of activities like

* Promotion of Health and Hygiene

* Service to others

* National Integration

* World Friendliness

* Relief work during emergencies like flood, fire and other natural calamities



The Youth Red Cross Volunteers attended orientation and training programmes at various places along with the Organiser. Mrs Beula Sebastin, Lecturer, Department of English, was nominated District Joint Organizer by the Indian Red Cross Society, Tamil Nadu Branch, Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU), Madurai in the year 1998 and she continues to hold the post till date

* Mrs Beula Sebastin, Lecturer, Department of English attended a 2-day orientation training for Youth Red Cross District Organisers from 15 and 16 November 2000 at Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU), Madurai

* The students attended a 3-day Orientation Programme from 31 March to 03 April 2000 along with the organizer at Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU), Madurai

* The Youth Red Cross Volunteers attended a State Level Study Camp at Vivekananda Kendra, Kanyakumari from 17 to 20 September 2001, along with the programme organizer

* The Youth Red Cross Organiser attended a 1-day consultation meeting regarding the Disaster Management Training Programme for students on 3 January 2002

* The Department of Youth Welfare, Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU), Madurai, and the Indian Red Cross society, Tamilnadu Branch, Chennai organised a 5-day Training Programme in Disaster Management for Youth Red Cross Volunteers, the District Youth Red Cross Organisers and the District Secretaries from 22 to 26 January 2002. Students gained a first hand knowledge of Principles and fundamentals of First Aid, Attitude, Knowledge and Skills required for Rescue Operation, Accident-Prone Explosives and Preventive and Post-event Relief measures. The next day other important topics like Life-saving Drugs and their applications during rescue operations, First Aid in situations like Flash floods, Accidents and Earth Quakes, Post-Disaster Counselling to the physically and mentally affected and Leadership and Adventurism were taught

* The Youth Red Cross Volunteers were taken to Madurai Rajaji Government Hospital. A team of doctors elaborately taught them how to handle and take care of the injured and the deceased during disasters with the help of visual aids. Student volunteers visited the Anatomy section and saw the dead bodies preserved. They visited the mortuary also. The volunteers were taken to the cyclone-prone site at Rameswaram and taught swimming and rescue operation during cyclone

* Every day the students attended Yoga classes from 5.30 a m to 6.30 a m. Every evening they were given training by trained doctors and nurses to give life- saving injections to the suffering asthmatics and the seriously injured

Note : It must be noted that our Thassim Beevi Abdul Kader College for Women (TBAKC), Kilakarai was the only women’s college to participate in the above programme along with 25 men’s colleges. It is also to the credit of the English Department of our college that it videographed the activities of the whole programme of the above seminar

* 25 Youth Red Cross volunteers attended a District level 1-day orientation programme at Rosary Mahal, Ramanathapuram on 15 March 2002
