Vision

The program’s vision is shared with the College vision for programs that aim to provide outstanding education in a distinct campus environment.

The aim of the course is to take a multidisciplinary approach by integrating advances in food processing in order to introduce students to the main principles of science and technology and their implementation in the food industry. The course covers the basic principles and practices of the major techniques used in food processing and preservation along with critical issues in food regulations and nutrition.

Our mission is to meet the needs of local and regional markets in the food sector and the food industry to provide qualified technologists.

Highlights

The Department of Food Processing was established in the year 2013–2014, under centrally sponsored scheme National Mission on Food Processing, (NMFP) by Government of India.

Learning objectives

Students will be able to:

  • Evaluate and rank foods with regard to their degree of processing;
  • Depict the steps involved in processing a common food item;
  • Describe the reasons why foods are processed, provide examples of processing techniques that apply to each reason and reflect on who (e.g., consumers or manufacturers) benefits most from each technique;
  • Describe how foods differ by their degree of processing, and provide examples of products and processing techniques that apply to each category;
  • Explain the health, social and economic concerns associated with the food processing industry.

 

About the Department

Food processing has been identified as the sunrise industry due to its enormous impact & significance in the Indian development sector. The importance of food processing &quality control lies in the fact that it has the capability to provide food to our population through scientific conservations, eliminating available losses and making available more balanced & nutritious food.

Under this course, apart from learning basic subjects related to the field, they will also be trained in specialized aspects of food processing technology as follows;

  • Food microbiology
  • Food chemistry
  • Food preservation
  • Food analysis
  • Fruits and vegetable processing

The course includes corresponding laboratory courses and industrial tour and project in final year. Electives will be in bakery and confectionery products, food packaging, waste management, project management and entrepreneurship, food and nutrition.

The department plans to start PG level programs in future.

Towards the objective to provide excellent teaching, practical training facilities in the frontier areas of Food Processing.

Objectives

Department of food processing has been established at Thassim Beevi Abdul Kader College for women to develop professionals for development, implementation and auditing of Food processing and entrepreneurship. It seeks to develop women’s capability to meet the global food safety and quality requirements and enhance competitiveness of food products. In long term perspective, it would contribute to ensure consumer safety within and outside the country.
