VISION                                                            

The Department of Home science and research centre has taken up the challenge of the Nation since its inception and has built its programmes oriented towards excellence and community development to shape the future teachers, administrators, research workers and home makers into nutrition conscious citizens.

 

MISSION

Provide scientifically planned, multi-dimensional, skill oriented, personality development courses which enable young girls to excel in areas of health, family care, community service and more importantly diverse career and professions in today’s context to

  • Provide education not only to acquire knowledge but also to indoctrinate a sound philosophy for holistic living.
  • Educate young girls towards independence and equality by imparting a sense of self-worth, integrity and purpose.
  • Empower young girls to respond creatively and with a sense of responsibility to the contemporary needs of the society.
  • Provide quality education and at the same time inculcate a spirit of service and dedication.

 

 

HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Home science was established in the year 1988 with the aim  to orient students to socio-cultural and economic environment effecting Dietary & Nutritional status of rural, urban communities and  enhance self-employment potential through entrepreneurial skill training and innovative nutritional programs for the dissemination of vital information to vulnerable sections of population and develop skills in planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating various programs in the developmental sectors of the community through the  Under graduate programme BSc – Home science the first UG programme started in the year 1988, The Department had 4 members of Faculty, 2 Lab Assistants and 10 students, has grown up now with a strength of 9 Faculty, 2 Lab Assistants and 176 students studying UG and PG programmes during 1992, the Department added another under graduate programme in BSc Food Service Management and Dietetics. The nomenclature of the BSc General Home science degree Programme was changed to BSc Home science with computer application in the academic year 1995-96 under UGC sponsored vocationalisation scheme. The Department had its PG programme in MSc Home science Food Service Management and Dietetics in the year 1999 by adding another feather to its cap in the year 2004-05 the institution achieved “Autonomous”.  The nomenclature of the programme MSc Home Science – Food Service Management and Dietetics was changed to MSc Home Science Nutrition and Dietetics in the year 2010-11 under autonomy later, the department of Home science was upgraded as Research centre under Alagappa University, Karaikudi during 2010 to offer MPhil and PhD – in Food and Nutrition four part – time scholars in part time programme and four scholars in full – time programme have registered for doctoral degree programme and six MPhil scholars have passed out of the department.

In addition to the above UG and PG Programmes, the Department has the following Diploma, PG diploma and certificate programmes as value addition to impart necessary skills for the under graduate and post graduate students of the department as well, to invite other department under graduate students to enhance their skills for employment or self employment.

  • PG Diploma in Seaweed Farming and Processing (Since 2005)
  • Diploma in Interior Decoration (Since 2007)
  • Diploma in Islamic Perspective in Home Science (2 year) (Since 2008)
  • Certificate, Diploma in Fashion Technology and Apparel Making (Since 2012)

  • Acquire knowledge and skills in the pursuit of academic excellence aimed at advancement in this area of specialisation, research and extension activities.
  • Acquire professional,vocational and entrepreneurial skills for career design and development.
  • Work proactively towards individual and group goals, within an integrated setting of diverse socio-cultural factors.
  • To be self-reliance through balance of freedom and discipline within the body, mind and spirit.

INDIAN DIETETIC ASSOCIATION (IDA)

Indian Dietetic Association Kilakarai chapter was started on 4th December, 2003 by the Head,Department of Home Science and Research Centre, Thassim Beevi Abdul Kader College for Women, Kilakarai. The Founder President is Prof Dr.S.Sumayaa, Professor & Head and was reelected during 2015 as president of IDA, Kilakarai chapter. The Vice-President is Ms. S.Muthumareeswari, Associate Professor of Department of Home Science, Thassim Beevi Abdul Kader College for Women, Kilakarai. The secretary is Ms.S.Sarmila, Chief Dietician, Meenakshi Hospital, Tanjore of Indian Dietetic Association Kilakarai. Joint Secretary is Ms. K.M Buvaneswari, Assistant Professor of Department of Home Science, Thassim Beevi Abdul Kader College for Women and Treasurer is  Ms.K.Kamalajothy, Assistant Professor in the department of Home Science.

 EXTENSION ACTIVITIES

Extension activities are undertaken both in rural and urban areas under National Service Scheme and Community and Social Services (UG students).Under Community Social Service and Village Development programme students covered the areas are Velanoor, Natham, MaruthanThoppu, Thinaikulam, Periyapattinam, Vethalai, Pananikulam and Erwadi at Ramanathapuram district.

  • Demonstration of Pickle, Jam, weaning foods in ICDS centre ( to mothers)

LAB FACILITIES

FOODS AND NUTRITION LABORATORY

Fosters to the needs of the young nutritionists and Home Scientists in preparing and combining foods into nourishing meals, understanding the function of nutrients and preparing both normal and therapeutic diets.

 

BIOCHEMISTRY LABORATORY

The students detect estimated nutrients present in various fresh and cooked samples, perform Bio-chemical analysis, and study the functions of nutrients in various metabolic pathways is fully equipped with modern equipments to carryout PG Research Projects.

The department has set this laboratory under the UGC innovative programme under emerging areas for the course PG Diploma in seaweed farming and processing .The Laboratory is mainly utilized by the PG students for research and development.

The Department organized programmes to provide the students with job training Programmes in different Hospitals, Computer Institutions, Hotels, Montessori training and so on. These are done in order to prepare them to meet the requirement of the present day situations.

The Department has a highly sophisticated infrastructure, which foster and enrich students with the knowledge and principles of Home Science.

INNOVATIONS AND BEST PRACTICES INITIATED/ADOPTED BY THE   DEPARTMENT FOR THE LAST THREE YEARS

  • Nutrition awareness programmes conducted for all the students and staff of the college on various occasions, awareness was created on breast feeding, cancer and reproductive healt
  • Advanced Training Kitchen is used as an incubator by SHG women to prepare the Bakery Products.
  • Continuous training and enhancement programs are given to SHG Women in Ramanathapuram District.

FUTURE PLAN OF HOMESCIENCE AND RESEARCH CENTRE

  • To become a Centre of Excellence in Nutritional Sciences and Research.
  • To establish a Food Testing Laboratory and as a Certification Agency for the local food resources like chillies, coriander seeds which are widely grown in Ramanathapuram District.
  • To start a marketing outlet for organic product developed by the department for “ PALM SUGAR” .
  • Processing the edible seaweeds for food.
